Learning support - glossary

Annual Review: All children who have a Statement of Special Educational Needs must have their statement reviewed at least annually. The meeting is usually held at school. The purpose of the review is to see how your child has been progressing, what targets have been met and what new targets need to be set, and whether an amendment of the statement is needed.

Individual Education Plan (IEP): The IEP is a planning, teaching and reviewing tool. It should record short-term targets and strategies for an individual pupil, that are different from or additional to those in place for the rest of the group or class.

Learning difficulty: This can be applied to a pupil who has significantly greater difficulty in learning then the majority of children of the same age, or has a disability which prevents or hinders him/her from making use of the educational facilities provided.

SEN Code of Practice: A guide for schools and LEAs about the help they give to pupils with special educational needs.

Special Educational Needs (SEN): Pupils have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.

Special educational provision means educational provision, which is additional to, or otherwise different from, the educational provision made generally for pupils of the same age.

Teaching Assistant (TA): An assistant providing in-school support for pupils with special educational needs. A TA will normally work with an individual pupil or small group of pupils giving them close support and also assisting their teacher.

Transition Plan: A plan which should form part of the first annual review after the child's 14th birthday, and any subsequent annual review. The purpose of the plan is to draw together information from a range of individuals within and beyond the school, in order to plan coherently for the young person's transition to adult life.

Tribunal: The Special Educational Needs Tribunal is an independent body that will hear parental appeals against LEA decisions on statutory assessment and statements.
