MFL options for Year 9 2013 - 2014
 
Our Year 8 pupils  will spend this week in lessons considering  their language option for Year 9. They will choose from either French or German. A letter has been sent home to parents to explain the process and the deadline for replies is Tuesday 25 June

It is nearly two years since the opening of our award winning refectory. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR AMAZING FIRST AIDERS 
 
The St John Ambulance Regional First Aid competition was held at Bristol Police headquarters and16 teams from all over the South West competed in the senior competition. Our winning team now go forward to the national finals in June. Read more …

THE MAY MILE Sunday 12 May 2013.
For its fourth year, The May Mile™ makes its first appearance at Sheldon School and hopes to attract 300 young runners. This year, the money raised will go to Youth Action Wiltshire. Registration will be from 10am and the first race is at 11am. This event is solely dedicated to ages 16 & under and is run in a Safe, off-road environment. It is fully marshalled and UK Athletics affiliated. More information at  www.maymile.co.uk
2013 BRITISH SCHOOLS JUDO CHAMPIONSHIP
Well done to Luca Tremblay who achieved Bronze at the British School Championships at sheffield on 9 March 2013.

REVISION AND EXAM SUPPORT EVENING FOR YEAR 11 PARENTS
Parents of Year 11 are invited to an evening with David Keeling, National speaker for exam preparation on Monday 11 March, 5.30-7pm. Textiles students met with ex-student Matt Crocker who is a successful tailor for Savile Row’s Gieves & Hawkes. Gieves & Hawkes have successfully designed bespoke suits for clients such as David Beckham, Jeremy Clarkson, Stephen Fry and The Royal Family. Read more...
PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION WINNER
Well done to Jacob Box and Ryan Oakes who won the Skatepark Theme photography competition.Their photographs are currently on display in an exhibition at The Emery Gate Shopping centre until the 23rd February.

E SAFETY Y8 & Y9 PARENTS EVENING
Monday 4 February, 6-7pm in The Sixth Form Centre. This is an event for parents of Year 8 and Year 9 pupils. Places are still available.
 
THE GUILDHALL SCHOOL FOR DAVID KNIGHT
Congratulations to David Knight who has accepted one of only six places at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama to study Music Composition in September. David was also offered a place at four other prestigous music conservatoires including the Royal College of Music. This is a phenomenal achievement, especially for a student who hasn't studied at a specialist school of music. We wish David all the best as he embarks on his career as a composer and look forward to maybe performing one of his works in the future.

FOOD BANK FOR CHIPPENAM
Well done to Catherine Mattimoe in Year 12. Catherine has initiated a collection of non-perishable food for Chippenham's Food Bank. This is a great initiative and we anticipate a significant collection over the next few weeks.

YEAR 7 SCIENCE FAIR
Congratulations to all the Year 7 pupils who worked so hard on their science fair projects over the past ten weeks.  A high proportion of the 280 entries will eligible for the CREST BRONZE Science Award and the best entries will qualify for to enter 'Bath Taps into Science' later in the year.
 
Y10 EXAMINATIONS
Year 10 will be sitting examinations for one week starting on Monday 4 February 2013.  Most examinations will be sat during normal lessons under examination conditions. A timetable and revision planner was issued to pupils during tutor time this week.
 
SCHOOL OPEN AS NORMAL
Sheldon School will be open as normal on Monday 21st January 2013.

PLAS PENCELLI SNOW UPDATE
Pupils are travelling back from Plas Pencelli and should arrive back at school about 3pm this afternoon for parents to pick them up. We are conscious that some parents may have difficulty getting to school and Mr Douglas will wait with any pupils who are not picked up.

Saturday rugby games versus Beaufort School have been cancelled due to frozen pitches in Gloucester. The decision was made on Thursday afternoon due to school closure on FridayThe weather forecast suggests that the pitches will not be playable by Saturday. Mr. Douglas - Head of PE Faculty.

EXAM RESULTS 2012
A level results are on Thursday 16th August at 9am.  Year 11 GCSE results are on Thursday 23 August at 10am.  Students will collect their results in the sixth form centre.

SHELDON'S NEW HEADTEACHER
Mr Neil Spurdell will become Sheldon's new headteacher on 1 September 2012.  He was appointed on March 14 from a very strong field of candidates including three headteachers from outstanding schools.  Mr Spurdell is currently Headteacher at John O'Gaunt School in Hungerford, West Berkshire.  See The Sheldon Standard.

Two Sheldon students were prize winners in the Rotary Club's Young Photographer 2012 competition.  The theme of the competition was Olympic Dreams.  Charlotte Harding was awarded second place and Alexandra Arfaras was third. See the photos here ...
 
 
CROSS COUNTRY AND BIATHLON WINS FOR SHELDON
Two Sheldon pupils had a busy weekend on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd January 2012.  Gemma Shepherd and Alex Jones competed in both the County Cross Country Championships and the National Biathlon Semi-Finals.  Both enjoyed success and Sheldon had winners in each competition. 
SHELDON'S A LEVEL RESULTS ARE BEST IN THE WEST
Sheldon's 2011 A level results were once again the best in the South West region, and 24th in the country.  The students average A level point score was 957, the highest ever achieved at Sheldon.  This is equivalent to an average student achievement of about four B grades at A level.  Read more ...
SHELDON ARE SOUTH WEST RUGBY CHAMPIONS
The Sheldon First XV has won the south west final to reach the quarter final stage of the Daily Mail RBS Rugby U18 Vase.  Sheldon defeated Wycliffe College, Gloucestershire with a 12-8 victory at Stroud RFC.  The quarter final will be at home to Ravens Wood School from Kent.  The match will be played on Wednesday 1st February at Chippenham RFC, kick off at 2.00pm.   Read more ...

MR MACMAHON IS LEAVING IN THE SUMMER
Sheldon's headteacher, Gerard MacMahon, is leaving Sheldon in July to become headmaster of Al Khor International School in Qatar.  Read more
MR DOUGLAS TO CARRY THE OLYMPIC TORCH
Adam Douglas, Sheldon's head of PE, has been chosen to carry the Olympic torch on July 13 2012, just two weeks before the Games open in London.  The great honour is a reward for the outstanding contribution he has made to sport and PE in Sheldon and the Chippenham community.
MATT DAWSON OPENS OUR REFECTORY
Matt Dawson came to Sheldon on Thursday 3rd November to lead the formal opening of our new refectory.  He is first and foremost a rugby player and was part of the England World Cup winning team in 2003, but he has enjoyed even wider fame on the BBC’s Question of Sport, by winning Celebrity Master Chef and by coming runner up in Strictly Come Dancing. Read more ...

EXCELLENT GCSE RESULTS
Sheldon has again achieved excellent GCSE results.  40% of pupils achieved the tough new EBacc standard - more than twice the national and county averages.
RECORD A LEVEL RESULTS
Sheldon's students have achieved record A level results with almost a third of entries achieving A* or A grades.  33 students achieved 3 A grades or better.
SHELDON IS ONE OF THE FIRST 100 TEACHING SCHOOLS
Sheldon has become one of the first in the country to be selected for an elite designation.  We are one of only 100 schools in England to be granted teaching school status.
SPORTS DAY RECORDS
2010's sports day saw eight records broken on the track.  In 2011 we have had two field event records: Harry Cook in the Year 7 long jump and Pippa Brown in the Year 8 javelin.
FIRST AID SUCCESS FOR YEAR 8s
Sheldon's three Year 8 teams have come fifth, second and first in the regional first aid competition in Portsmouth.  Read more ...

OFSTED's INTERIM ASSESSMENT OF SHELDON 
Ofsted has carried out an interim assessment of standards at Sheldon.  They have judged that the school's outstanding performance has been sustained.
