It’s a fashion hat-trick for Elizabeth Simms

Young Fashion Designer UK is an exciting national competition which has been established since 2010.  It focuses on enhancing the talent of Young Fashion Designers to showcase and promote the exceptional work achieved by GCSE, AS, A2 students studying fashion and textiles design across the United Kingdom.

Stretching across the UK, the competition is hosted by centres in the South and Midlands who are each committed to providing a platform for young fashion designers.

Sheldon School saw three of their most talented DT Textiles designers shortlisted for the national award which was held at Kent College, Pembury on Saturday 1st July 2017. Poppy Daly (GCSE) Safiya Mahmood (GCSE) and Elizabeth Simms (A Level) all travelled up to the event to showcase and present their DT Textiles coursework in front of a range of judges and other finalists from across the UK.

Judges included fashion designers, fashion bloggers and professionals from across the textiles and fashion industry who interviewed Poppy, Safiya and Elizabeth about the work they had produced. After a day of workshops, presentations and interviews the final results were announced at 3pm in front of all the finalists and their families.

Poppy Daly was awarded Third Prize for her GCSE African inspired dress,

Safiya Mahmood was awarded runner up for her GCSE Indian inspired outfit and

Elizabeth Simms was awarded First Prize and the title ‘Young Fashion Designer of the year’ for her A Level work.

Judges were so impressed with Elizabeth’s jacket that they asked her to return next year to sit on the judges’ panel for the 2018 competition. This is a hat-trick for Elizabeth who has won the First prize award for the last three years for both her GCSE and AS project work. No other student has ever achieved that accomplishment.

Everyone at Sheldon School, including the DT faculty, wishes all the best to the girls and are very proud of their achievements in DT Textiles. We also hope Elizabeth has a fantastic time as she starts her foundation degree in Bath next year. Elizabeth Simms – a name to remember for future fashion design!
