Changes to Sheldon's Catering
Here are some of the proposed changes to Sheldon's catering. We would like as many parents as possible to consider the proposals and respond to the questions here.
We will have three areas in the school where food is served: the main dining room, the hall foyer and the sports hall dining room. There will also be a newly built sixth form facility.
The main dining room will serve hot meals at lunch. There will be four £1.50 choices: a meat option, a vegetarian option, a pasta meal and a filled jacket potato. Side salads and desserts will be 50p each, fruit will be 35p, fresh fruit salads will be 45p. Healthy drinks will be on sale from 30p. These will be waters and fruit juices, uncarbonated and low in sugar and artificial colouring. The idea is that children can get a healthy meal for £1.50 or £2. Anyone coming to this dining room must have one of the four hot meal options. No snacks will be available: pizzas, burgers, chips, croquettes, baked beans and the infamous salad boxes will all be removed from sale.
The hall foyer will have a salad bar (five items for £1.60), boxed salads for £1.25, filled jacket potatoes for £1.50, and a pasta meal for £1.50. There will be hot grilled paninis for £1.35, hot and cold tortillas for £1.20 and a fruit bar (four items for 85p). There will also be cereal bars, fruit and healthy drinks. There may possibly be a limited number of cakes and cookies. There will no longer be sandwiches, rolls, burgers, sausage rolls, hot dogs, pizza, cheese and onion rolls, crisps, cheese puffs and confectionery.
The sports hall will sell cold items: baguettes, sandwiches, wholemeal hoagies, French bread pizza and filled wraps. There will also be fruit, cereal bars, cakes and cookies possibly, and healthy drinks. Pizzas, cheeseburgers, sausage rolls, rolls, bacon rolls, confectionery and crisps will all be removed from sale.
We will continue to offer the 'meal in the bag'. Before school, children will be able to order from a wide range of brown and white sandwiches, baguettes and wraps, fruit, hot paninis, French bread pizzas, filled croissants and healthy drinks. They are made to order and can be collected at lunch. Only two vending machines will remain for the main school: one with bottled water and one with healthy snacks.
In time we hope to be able to develop a voucher system so parents can prepay for £1.50 or £2.00 meals. This might provide peace of mind that dinner money is not being spent elsewhere.
