The Equality Act 2010 introduced a single Public Sector Equality Duty (PSED) that applies to public bodies, including maintained schools and academies, and extends to certain protected characteristics - race, disability, sex, age, religion or belief, sexual orientation, pregnancy and maternity, and gender reassignment.
It has three main elements. In carrying out their functions, we are required to have due regard to the need to:
- Eliminate discrimination and other conduct that is prohibited by the Act.
- Advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
- Foster good relations across all characteristics - between people who share a protected characteristic and people who do not share it.
Our Equalities Policy demonstrates our awareness of our duties under the Equality Act 2010 and we consider any equality implications when developing and approving policies and reviewing them regularly with equality in mind.
Our equality objectives aim to:
- Eliminate discrimination.
- Improve equality of opportunity for people with protected characteristics.
- Consult and involve those affected by inequality in the decisions our school takes to promote equality and eliminate discrimination.
Sheldon School is committed to providing equality of access to its site and services. The Access Plan details what the school is doing to ensure disabled people have equality of access.
