Year 9 Art Trip to Cardiff Art Gallery
On Thursday 19th January, 45 Year 9 students visited Cardiff Art Gallery to see a fantastic variety of art work on display. The gallery houses the national Collection of Wales, so many famous Welsh artists were represented, for example Gwen John and Augustus John, and the students were introduced to ideas and symbolism associated with portrait and landscape paintings.
One of the aims of the trip was to encourage students to view and appreciate different types of art from a variety of eras, and this was very successfully achieved: Traditional and contemporary paintings, drawings and sculptures, including some by well-known artists such as Monet and Van Gogh, were on show and students made some impressive sketches of their favourites.
Also on display at the gallery were video and film pieces entered for the prestigious Artes Mundi 7 Contemporary Art Prize. We were fortunate to have a guided tour of these fascinating works, so students could appreciate the artists’ ideas and relevance of art in today’s world.
The students enjoyed their day and it was great that everyone could express their personal opinions and thoughts about different types or genres of art. Hopefully, these ideas will stay with us and inspire art work and projects in the future. Well done to the Year 9 students for their brilliant behaviour and attitude on the day!
