Hall of Fame Grand Opening
We were very pleased to officially open our new Hall of Fame last week at a special reception and ceremony celebrating the extraordinary achievements of our students and staff. We have collected memorabilia over the last several decades and have now placed them in a prominent space frequented by students and visitors to Sheldon.
The success of our students in the world of sports, music, science, academia, business and the arts epitomise the ethos of our school to be kind, be brave and be the best you. Our Hall of Fame also recognises the years of outstanding service, dedication and commitment of our former PE staff Richard Bull, Paul Weller, Emma le Fleming and Adam Douglas. They have all helped inspire and support many of the athletes featured in the Hall of Fame.
During the Grand Opening, we welcomed back former students and staff that are honoured in our Hall of Fame, along with their families. Over 100 current students selected for their leadership and contribution to the school life also attended the Grand Opening presentation featuring some of our most celebrated alumni: Tyrone Mings, Dan Bethell and the Moloney Brothers (aka The Fore Bros).
Tyrone Mings
Tyrone Mings, former England international footballer and Aston Villa defender was unable to attend in person due to training commitments ahead of the Europa League Final (which Aston Villa won!), but he sent a video message to our students.
I’m so honoured to be part of Sheldon School’s history. I’m so honoured that the achievements post Sheldon have gone to be celebrated, not only of myself but all of the people that helped make Sheldon such a great school.
He encouraged students to keep working hard so that their achievements can be similarly celebrated one day. Tyrone is a powerful example of our school values to be kind, be brave and be the best you.
Dan Bethell
Dan Bethell is one of Team GB’s leading Paralympic athletes in para-badminton. He competed in the 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games and the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games bringing home Silver Medals in both games that he proudly showed off to students. He has also won multiple World and European championships and is currently ranked world number one in para-badminton men’s singles SL3. He is known for his determination, resilience and passion for inspiring others by breaking down barriers for people with disabilities. He is an extraordinary athlete and a powerful role model for all Sheldon students.
Dan Bethell explained that his participation in sport at Sheldon helped him discover Badminton and allowed him to get involved in multiple teams including rugby and football.
Sheldon was fantastic at supporting me. It gave me opportunities and made me a lot tougher. I had a lot of difficulties in school that other kids may not have. Through it all, Sheldon was there and really supportive. The PE Department were fantastic in getting me involved. I never wanted anything to hold me back and having that mentality was really important to me.
The Fore Bros
The Moloney brothers, also known as the Fore Bros, have created one of the fastest-growing YouTube channels in the UK. Ronan, Patrick, Declan and Conor are known for combining competitive golf with humour and personality. They have built a huge following and strong brand, demonstrating their keen interest in the sport as well as their creative and business acumen. They bring a fresh, modern feel to golf with through their blend of sport and light-hearted sibling rivalry.
The Moloney brothers all completed their education at Sheldon School and Sixth Form after transferring from a much smaller school. They believe that the size and scale of Sheldon gave them the confidence needed to prepare for future success. Their experience at Sheldon and in sports helped define the successful athletes and content creators they are today.
Future Leaders
We are confident that our current students will continue to build on the legacy of success at Sheldon School. We already have current students representing their county and country in a variety of sports and have seen many talented young people grace our stage during concerts and productions. Our classrooms are full of future leaders who are bound to make contributions to the world in many wonderful ways. As Dan Bethell told students, the key to finding success is learning how to respond to challenges.
Never let failure define you. What is important is how you respond to those failures. No matter wat you want to do in your life, just keep plugging away. Learn from your mistakes and you’ll get there in the end.
We hope that our Hall of Fame acts as a daily reminder of the extraordinary success that can be achieved when you follow our Sheldon values to be kind, be brave and be the best you. Thank you to all the former staff, students, parents, governors and friends who attended the evening, as well as everyone who helped make the event a success. If you were a student at Sheldon and have memorabilia you would like to contribute to the Hall of Fame, please email alumni@sheldonschool.co.uk.
