Sheldon Sixth Form Y13 Leavers Day

11 May 26

Last Friday we held our Year 13 Leavers’ Day, a chance to celebrate the year group and to mark the end of their journey through Sheldon School and Sixth Form. It was a day full of laughs and memories, one last opportunity for our students to spend time together before exams begin.

We are very proud of this year group and know that they will have outstanding achievements in their exams, as well as in their future beyond Sheldon Sixth Form. It has been an honour to watch them grow as they challenged themselves in their A Level courses and developed into talented young adults. With exams beginning this week, it’s easy to get bogged down on the importance of results, but as Head of Year, Mr Humphreys, reminded students:

The grades you get don’t tell the full story. There’s no league table for courage, there’s no league table for resilience, there’s no league table to being kind everyday – and that’s what you have been for the last two years to yourself and to each other.

Leaver’s Day Events

We began with a morning breakfast in tutor bases, followed by a quiz in the Hall that challenged student’s knowledge of staff pets, musical artists from last century and random (but incredibly useful) facts.

Everyone then headed out to the field for the highlight of every Sheldon Sixth Form Leaver’s Day—the games! Each tutor group battled it out in events to test their mettle: welly wanging, hula hooping, paper airplane throwing, egg and spoon races, obstacle course, wacky clothes relays and the ultimate of tutor group superiority—tug of war!

After all the fun on the field we headed back to the hall for ice lollies and prizes (including coveted items to help students living on their own for the first time—a cheese grater, microwave sauce pan and toastie maker!) Each year we ask students to produce a leavers’ video. This is their chance to show off their creativity and share their memories of the year group. This year’s video featured Oscar winning production from Alex, Izzy, George and Amber as they cast Mr Humphries, Mr Spiers and Mr Lynch as unforgettable ingénues in a hilarious music video parody. We’ve seen many videos over the years and this one is definitely one of the very best!

We were also treated to a beautiful piano performance by Raven, a Young Musician of the Year finalist. The winner from the Sixth Form category of the Young Musician of the Year, George, closed the day with his incredible drumming. Both students have been a constant fixture in Sheldon concerts for many years. We have enjoyed watching their talents grow throughout the year and we will miss their energy and musicality.

Thank You

Thank you to everyone on the Sixth Form Team and those who work behind the scenes in the school to support our students. This includes Head of Year, Mr Humphreys, who works tirelessly for the year group and all of the Year 13 tutors who go above and beyond to get everyone prepared for exams as well as life as a young adult. We’d also like to thank our Careers Advisor, Miss Witchell, for helping provide guidance and insight into options for studying and pursuing careers after leaving school.

A huge thank you needs to be given to our Sixth Form Pastoral Lead, Mrs Coombs, who has supported so many students through some of the most challenging moments of their lives. This year group in particular have had to overcome many obstacles and we are proud of the strength of our pastoral system to give young people the support they need during a pivotal moment of their lives.

We’d like to wish all of our students the best of luck for their exams. While you are all on Study Leave, the Sixth Form Team is still here to support you. Please feel to drop into the office anytime and talk to us if you need anything during the exam period. The Study Room and Common Room are open as you continue to revise. We’re looking forward to celebrating the end of exams at the Sixth Form Ball on Tuesday 30 June and seeing you all for results day on Thursday 13 August.
