Young Musician of the Year Awards
Earlier this week we held our annual Young Musician of the Year Awards and Finalist Concert. It was an extraordinary show with the largest group of finalists in Sheldon history, showcasing the talented musicians at our school.
This is a highlight of our school calendar, that allows students from all year groups an opportunity to perform a variety of musical genres and instruments. We were incredibly impressed by the commitment our students showed in preparing for the performance, as many are in the middle of sitting mocks or revising for their exams.
The event was adjudicated by Bethan Dudley Fryar, professional opera singer and Director of Vocal Studies at St Mary’s, Calne, who had the enviable task of selecting the night’s winners. Speaking to the audience, she explained that she was looking for performance, commitment, artistry and a little bit of magic. “Tonight is a celebration. I couldn’t believe the variety we’ve had this evening. The enjoyment was palpable, not only in their performances but also from the audience.”
She reminded students to always feel empowered by their talent. “I encourage you all to go forth with your music because you are all wonderful!”
Headteacher, Mr Lynch, said that the performances moved him to tears and that the evening represents all that we stand for as a school. “Nights like this happen because our students are inspired by the incredible music teachers in this school, as well as the visiting music teachers that work individually with students.”
We would like to thank music teacher Mrs Hall for organising the Young Musician of the Year Awards every year, as well as Mr Goldsworthy and Alfie-Jay for working the sound and lights. Thank you also to Jacob Byrne providing accompaniment.

A performance that moved me and got under the skin of the composer’s needs for the piece and atmosphere.

There was a lot of magic in this class and was very competitive. I felt that the performer was breathing into the music.
