Sheldon Alumni: Shania Harper
At the end of last year, our Year 12 students in Sheldon Sixth Form had the opportunity to hear from one of our accomplished former students, Shania Harper. After completing her A Levels in chemistry, biology and philosophy & ethics in 2018, Shania attended the University of Reading to study biomedical science. She then earned her MsC in molecular medicine from Imperial College London and is currently completing her PhD with the Institute of Cancer Research.
She spoke to students about how she fell in love with academia and research, encouraging them to prioritise education over salary and to pursue interests that spark passion. For Shania, that has been medical research, particularly cancer research. “You have to be perfectly delusional to take on a field where there has been no cure,” she admitted. She explained to students that she tackles problems by breaking them up in to smaller components. “You cave to start small, take one small question and grind it down until you get an answer.” This advice can be applicable to all fields of research, not just cancer.
Shania explained that she never intended to become a researcher, but found that the benefits of academia were very enticing. Rather than rush for an industry career, she has enjoyed being able to take advantage of student life while continuing her education. She loves the community found at universities—like societies and clubs, meeting people in other fields, conferences and travel opportunities and of course, student discounts!
Sixth Form is a time to learn new subjects and to learn ways to study independently. She reminded students that they don’t have to know their exact path right now, but should begin to question themselves to find out what they really enjoy learning.
Shania is the guest speaker at the Sheldon School Awards evening in Tuesday 20 October. She will be speaking to all of the honourees and their families to inspire future young scientists and to encourage students to follow their passions.
On Tuesday afternoon, Shania will be joined her fellow classmate, Phoebe Hardingham, in the Sixth Form Building to provide advice and support for Sixth Form students about applying for uni and preparing personal statements, as well as about their individual areas of study.
